You know you’re a K-Pop fan when your first thought when you hear the word “lightstick” is to think of something you bring with you and wave around as you cheer on your favorite idols at a concert. Lightsticks have evolved over the years in complexity and style, but many things have also remained consistent. That said, there are a few artists who rebel or have rebelled against that norm and have given fans some of the most unique—maybe even strange—lightstick designs we’ve ever seen. Here are five lightsticks we think are worth mentioning.
DAY6: wrist band
DAY6’s lightstick isn’t really a stick at all – it’s a light band. The unique light was released two years ago and looks just like a wristwatch, only it lights up and performs just like other lightsticks. It even offers the option to customize the band, just like real watches. There are a few reasons behind the unique design, including that it’s a personal style preference of the members and that it’d be easier to rock out at one of their concerts wearing it rather than waving a lightstick. Regardless of the reason behind the unique design, we can’t deny that we’re totally loving the look.
Cherry Bullet: toy gun
This is one of the newest additions to the lightstick family except that, just like DAY6’s light band, it’s particularly nontraditional. The group’s lightstick is designed to look like a gun, taking after the “bullet” part of their name. To match the “cherry” part, the lightstick is cherry-colored and also features the group’s stylized name. It’s the barrel of the “gun” that lights up, and even if the initial appearance looks and sounds a little intimidating, it still reflects a type of beauty that mirrors its group.
iKON: baseball bat
iKON just might be the only K-Pop group that doesn’t have a lightstick where the light-up part is only one end. Instead, the group’s baseball bat design lights up throughout the entire bat to glow their pearl red color. It’s a lightstick that also boasts its own name—the KONBAT, a portmanteau of the group’s name and combat. It’s a lightstick that’s full of attitude and swag, and one very worthy of both its name and its group.
B1A4: “Bbyeongie”
Up until their regroup two years ago, B1A4 had what many fans called the “ugliest” lightstick in all of K-Pop. While it’s not necessarily ugly, it is most definitely unique. Lovingly named “Bbyeongie,” the lightstick resembles something that might feature in a Tim Burton film. Sadly, it was replaced in 2018, a change that was met mixed reviews. While “Bbyeongie” is no longer B1A4’s official lightstick, it goes down in K-Pop history as one of the most unique of all time.
N.Flying: a potato
While this no longer is—nor ever was—the band’s official lightstick, this very unique take one is something only this band could think of. Following the release of their 2018 single “Hot Potato,” N.Flying members decided to take the initiative and create something cute and funny for their fans. The result? An actual potato on a stick. The band’s members would handmake each potato-stick every week for their fans who came to watch them live. No two were ever alike, which is what made this “light” stick truly one-of-a-kind.
Every artist’s lightstick has its own character and is unique in its own right. Are there any exceptional examples you feel should be included in a future article?
