The graphic news branch of the Korean news agency Yonhap News has come under fire by ARMYs for their recent tweet about the Billboard Hot 100.
The above graphic was tweeted to showcase K-Pop artists who have charted on the Billboard Hot 100. The most recent accomplishment by BLACKPINK with their song “Ice Cream” placing 13th, was what prompted the tweet.
However, the chart left out several BTS songs that have had success on Billboard, such as “IDOL,” “MIC Drop,” “Black Swan,” and “Make It Right.”
ARMYs swarmed the Yonhap News Graphic Team’s Twitter account, and a statement was promptly issued.
As per the title, the graphic pertains to all artists, with today’s goals of highlighting BLACKPINK’s achievement in ranking 13th. We highlighted BTS on the 1st when they placed 1st for the first time. News graphics are edited to focus on the relevant subject at hand, do not address all subjects, and there are no ulterior motives at play. We have received feedback voicing disappointment from BTS fans. However as explained above, unlike written articles, graphics by definition place importance on highlighting certain subjects. We appreciate your support.
The statement was not deemed sufficient for ARMYs worldwide, who continue to criticize Yonhap News on Twitter.
