Dear Hyeri kdrama – Episode 5 Recap and Spoilers.

In the Genie TV original Dear Hyeri, Shin Hae-sun faces another heartbreak after a romantic date with her ex-boyfriend, Lee Jin-wook. The two had been together for eight years before their breakup, making this reunion doubly painful. Tension escalates as the reasons behind Lee Jin-wook’s reluctance to marry are gradually revealed.

The fifth episode of Dear Hyeri, which aired on October 7, recorded a nationwide viewership rating of 2.8% and 3.2% in the metropolitan area, marking a notable achievement by exceeding 3% in that region. The show continues to set new viewership records with each episode, fueled in part by an emotional OST featuring Lee Hi’s captivating vocals. The burgeoning romance between Lee Jin-wook and Kang Hoon, surrounding Shin Hae-sun’s character, has positioned the drama as a must-watch this fall (according to Nielsen Korea).

Episode 5 begins with Eun Ho (Shin Hae-sun) waking up in her home the day after sharing a kiss with Hyun Oh (Lee Jin-wook) in an elevator. Eun Ho is surprised yet joyful to find Hyun Oh still by her side. The episode then delves into their intertwined past, contrasting Hyun Oh’s present care for Eun Ho with the coldness that led to their previous separation.

Three years ago, Hyun Oh had declared, “Marriage? I won’t do that, Eun-ho. I told you from the beginning.” Eun Ho responded, “We dated for eight years. If you truly didn’t want to marry me, you should have ended things long ago.” After their breakup, Eun Ho, taken aback by the sudden turn of events, pleaded, “This isn’t right. We dated for eight years.” However, Hyun Oh pushed her hand away, coldly asserting, “Whether you dated for eight years or eight weeks, breaking up is the same.” Despite his tears, he chose to end the relationship, drawing sympathy from viewers.

As Eun Ho and Hyun Oh navigated their daily lives post-kiss, they smiled happily, seemingly rekindling their past romance, yet an underlying tension persisted between them.

Eun Ho’s visit to the hospital where her sister Hye-ri used to go took an emotional turn when she met the doctor and revealed her inability to remember anything. The narrative then shifts to the sisters’ childhood, showcasing Eun Ho as Hye-ri’s guardian after losing their parents in an accident.

As time went on, Hye-ri, now a college student, went missing, and their grandmother, who had raised them, passed away, destabilizing Eun Ho’s life. In response, Eun Ho resolved to live out the dreams of her missing sister. However, this led to her developing dissociative identity disorder. In a poignant moment with the doctor, she confessed, “I wanted to live once. If I could live as that happy child, wouldn’t I be able to do that too?” When asked if that made her happy, she replied, “I lived as that child for three years, but not at all,” evoking a sense of sadness.

Meanwhile, Joo-yeon (Kang Hoon) began to question the relationship between Eun Ho and Hye-ri. During a chance encounter with Eun Ho’s coworker, reporter Jeon Jae-yong (Yoon Joo-man), while working on a special broadcast, Joo-yeon learned of Eun Ho’s connection to Hye-ri. After recalling Hye-ri’s previous claim of being Eun Ho’s only daughter and noticing their striking resemblance, he grew perplexed. When Joo-yeon visited Hye-ri’s house, he was bewildered to see Hye-ri entering with Hyun Oh, suggesting a romantic connection.

Eun Ho and Hyun Oh’s fragile happiness shattered when Hyun Oh abruptly left Eun Ho’s house after receiving a call from Soo-jung (Lee Pil-ra). The scene replayed their earlier separation, with Eun Ho tearfully pleading, “I’ll never ask you to marry me again. I’m sorry.” Hyun Oh, however, cut her off, saying, “Let’s stop.” As Eun Ho returned to the present, her expression reflected her heartache.

Hyun Oh later returned, knocking on Eun Ho’s door, drenched in the rain, and imploring her, “Please hurt me like this sometimes, Eun Ho. Will you do that, Eun Ho?” This moment hinted at his enduring love for her. Yet, Eun Ho responded, “No. I will never get sick. I will live well like that,” and added, “Goodbye. This is how you say goodbye, right?” With a bittersweet smile, she echoed his earlier words, “Why are you crying? You should say it with a smile, like a goodbye.” She then closed the door after saying, “Goodbye, Jeong Hyun Oh.” Standing alone for a moment, Eun Ho turned away, now the one initiating the farewell.

At the episode’s conclusion, a scene hinted at the reasons behind Hyun Oh’s aversion to marriage. In a monologue at a funeral, he stated, “A woman is coming to marry me. I have to take care of the old ladies all by myself. This place is okay for me, but it’s hell for everyone else.” When asked if he wanted to marry, he fell silent, revealing his love and desperation for Eun Ho, evoking pity.

Meanwhile, the Genie TV original To My Harry is a romantic drama that explores themes of healing and rebirth as announcer Eun Ho develops a new identity while reconnecting with her ex-boyfriend Hyun Oh. The series airs every Monday and Tuesday at 10 p.m. on Genie TV, Genie TV Mobile, and ENA.
