“Joseon Exorcist” continues to face severe backlash despite SBS’s apology and explanation.
Last night, “Joseon Exorcist” episode 1 aired and despite doing well in viewership ratings, the drama was embroiled in controversy, it has come under fire for the Chinese props used in it.
Viewers claimed that portrayal counts as a distortion of Korean history. Since then, the production team issued an explanation and apology, read it here. Despite the apology and explanation, the backlash didn’t subside.
SBS had explained that the location for the filming was set up as in the vicinity of Uiju County (Ming Dynasty’s border), they have prepared props using their imagination that such region would be frequently visited by Chinese people.
However, netizens retorted to their official position stating, “Ming Dynasty never bordered Joseon at all during King Tae-jong period and Uiju is not anywhere close to the Ming Dynasty border nor part of it.”
As a result, some brands started pulling back their advertisements in the drama due to the public sentiment.
Many viewers have also sent complaints to The Korea Communications Standards Commission, a total of 1700 complaints have been sent in thus far, an unprecedented number of complaints.
Added to that, one netizen even posted a petition to the blue house titled ‘We request the immediate suspension of broadcasting of the historical the Northeast Project ‘Joseon Excorist’” The petition has attracted attention.
The issue also grew bigger due to the fact that “Joseon Exorcist” is written by the same screenwriter who wrote “Mr. Queen,” another historical drama that was accused of distorting history as well.
SBS has not issued any further response to the mounting backlash against the drama or the new complaints and petition filed. The drama has aired its second episode today.
