The cast of Family By Choice is hinting at a fresh romance as they transition from family to lovers.
On the morning of the 8th, a production conference for the new JTBC Wednesday drama Family By Choice was held at a hotel in Sindorim-dong, Guro-gu, Seoul. Director Kim Seung-ho and actors Hwang In-youp, Jung Chae-yeon, Bae Hyeon-seong, Choi Won-young, and Choi Moo-sung attended the event.
Family By Choice is a romance that unfolds when three young people, who have been together as a family for 10 years, reunite after a decade of separation. The series is based on the Chinese drama Go Ahead.
Director Kim Seung-ho stated, “I believe the story will resonate not only in China but around the world, as it explores themes that family members can relate to. We reflected the lifestyle and food culture in a Korean context. While the Chinese actors have their own strengths, we aimed for a synchronization rate close to 100% to highlight the talents of our Korean actors.”
Director Kim expressed his affection for the cast by likening each actor to a natural element. He described Hwang In-youp as having eyes like the deep ocean, Jung Chae-yeon as a flower that always brings strength and energy, Bae Hyeon-seong as the bright sunlight after the rain, Choi Won-young as a rainbow visible wherever you go, and Choi Moo-sung as an honest tree.
In the drama, Hwang In-youp plays Kim San-ha, a model student with a neat appearance and strong academic performance, but who carries emotional pain from a childhood experience. He reflected, “Everyone lives with deficiencies and wounds. If they don’t heal properly, they become deeper wounds.”
Jung Chae-yeon, who portrays Yoon Joo-won, described her character as bright and positive, someone who quickly shakes off negativity and values family dinners more than grand future plans. She shared her reasons for joining the project, saying, “I was drawn to the warmth and the diverse representations of family.”
Regarding the unique romance that develops after living together as a family for 10 years, Hwang In-youp commented, “You might find it unconventional, but just like children who bicker and play together in the same class, feelings can develop even when living in the same house. You’re family, yet because you’re not related by blood, it’s possible.” He added, “Though I haven’t expressed it yet, it’s unrequited love. If you watch our drama, you’ll see that these moments are exciting, heartwarming, and enjoyable.”
Bae Hyeon-seong, who plays Kang Hae-joon, emphasized the importance of family despite not being related by blood, stating, “We’re not related by blood, but as affection builds, I believe it’s possible.”
Family By Choice will premiere on the 9th at 8:50 PM and will air two episodes every Wednesday.
