Kim Hee-ae is the Queenmaker in new teaser

Kim Hee-ae is the Queenmaker in new teaser

Public opinion is the name of the game in Queenmaker’s race for Seoul governor. And when you need the best of the best to handle your public image, you call Kim Hee-ae (A Couple’s World).

Kim Hee-ae plays Hwang Do-hee, PR expert and branding extraordinaire for a large conglomerate. She’s at the top of her game until one day she shocks everyone by choosing to work for the scrappy underdog candidate, Oh Seung-sook, played by Moon Sori (On the Verge of Insanity).

Seung-sook is a human rights lawyer also known as the rhino of justice by her supporters and (many) enemies. She’s a tenacious fighter that holds the rich and powerful accountable for their crimes, and she’s no stranger to a viral protest moment. When Do-hee sees Seung-sook’s potential to garner public goodwill, she’ll convince her to stick it to the man and run for office.

However, even with a queenmaker like Do-hee on her side, Seung-sook has her work cut out for her running against candidates like Baek Jae-min, played by Ryu Soo-young (Here’s My Plan), and Seo Min-jung, played by Jin Kyung (Love in Contract). With cunning, connections, and all the cash in the world at their disposal, they won’t mind smearing another candidate or faking a PR stunt if it means an edge in the polls.

In the teaser, we see Seung-sook do what she does best: leading protests, staging sit-ins, and giving verbal smackdowns in court. She’s garnered quite the grassroots following with the hashtag-able slogan “Never die,” and it’s Seung-sook’s moxie and no-filter public image that ultimately has Do-hee sitting her down and telling her to run for governor.

We then get a glimpse into the circus that goes into running for governor, from the debates, to the under the table dealings, to the screaming matches when tensions run high. It’s a race that heavily favors candidates like Jae-min that have money, manpower, and star quality — the three essentials to winning. But not to worry, Do-hee reassures Seung-sook, “I’ve never lost. I’ll win no matter what.” We get more shots of the chaotic showdown, and end on a shot of Seung-sook, sporting a fresh Hillary Clinton haircut, ready to jump into the fray.

Written by Moon Ji-young (Who Are You) and directed by Oh Jin-seok (People With Flaws), Queenmaker will premiere on Netflix on April 13.
