Korean Health and Medical Workers’ Union Releases Statement Following YG Entertainment’s Decision to Delete Nurse Scene in BLACKPINK’s “Lovesick Girls” MV

On October 8, Thursday, the Korean Health and Medical Workers’ Union released a statement following YG Entertainment’s decision to delete Jennie’s nurse scene in BLACKPINK’s “Lovesick Girls” music video.

Their statement reads:

“We are happy to hear BLACKPINK’s decision to replace the video as soon as possible, showing a quick response befitting of a global star. We hope that this incident will serve as a warning to all regarding the problematic climate in our society; in which people so easily sexualize people of certain professions and certain groups, not just nurses.

The nurses of the Korean Health and Medical Workers’ Union Korean Health and Medical Workers’ Union will continue to fulfill their duties as front liners against COVID-19. Just as they have put all their effort to ensure the health of our nation’s people for the past 117 years of history, we will continue our roles as guardians of the nation’s health for the next 100 years.”

On October 7, Wednesday, YG Entertainment announced their decision to delete Jennie’s nurse scene from the “Lovesick Girls” music video. This comes after the Korean Health and Medical Workers’ Union criticized the music video for their representation of nurses and claiming Jennie’s attire – which consisted of a cap, tights, a short skirt, and high heels, were inaccurate of an actual nurses’ uniform and the imagery used in the music video is used for sexual appeal.

They had slammed YG Entertainment for sexual objectifying nurses, as it is a women-dominated profession, making them the victim of belittlement despite their expertise in the medical field.

Korean netizens had also slammed the outfit for sexualizing medical workers, as well as for consistently dressing Jennie in revealing outfits.
