Jaehyun of NCT has crafted his own distinct musical identity with his debut solo album, J.

According to SM Entertainment on the 3rd, Jaehyun was deeply involved in every aspect of his album J, which was released on the 26th of last month. He took charge of the album’s direction, as well as writing and composing the tracks. The title song, “Smoke,” is an R&B track that blends hip-hop and pop elements, showcasing Jaehyun’s soft vocals and unconventional flow. His low-to-mid range voice and well-balanced technique highlight his skills as a vocalist.

The album features diverse themes, with “Roses” exploring the pain of lost love and “Dandelion” capturing pure innocence, both through the metaphor of flowers. Jaehyun wrote both of these tracks. “Easy” brings a cheerful vibe with its groovy R&B sound, while “Completely,” the album’s sole ballad, delivers honest and straightforward emotions.

Additionally, “Can’t Get You” stands out with its local sensibility, and “Flamin’ Hot Lemon,” a collaboration with the popular American R&B/pop duo Emotional Oranges, offers a lively and exhilarating atmosphere.

Jaehyun has a history of releasing solo music, starting with “Try Again” in 2017, a collaboration with singer-songwriter Dear. At his second solo concert in 2021, he comforted fans with a performance of “Lost,” a song for which he wrote the lyrics. He followed with his first solo single, “Forever Only,” in 2022, and “Horizon” last year.
