Premiere Watch: The Glory, Island

Premiere Watch: The Glory, Island

It’s time to welcome the final two dramas of 2022. This weekend we have Netflix’s high-buzz revenge thriller, and TVING’s smaller (but still kinda buzzy) fantasy action thriller. I guess the year’s going out with thrills!

The Glory

Time slot: Friday (Single drop)
Broadcaster: Netflix
Genre: Revenge, thriller
Episode count: 8 (Part 1)

Reasons to watch: So much buzz, it’s almost exhausting! The Glory, Netflix’s final original drama of 2022, stars Song Hye-gyo and Lee Do-hyun in a tale written by none other than Kim Eun-sook. Word on the street is it’s dark and compelling — which makes sense, since it’s about a bullied and abused heroine who brings down a world of hurt on her past tormentors. There are no puppies and sunshine in this one, folks. Also worth noting, Netflix has cut the series in two, with Part 2 (a.k.a. the second half of the run) set to premiere in March of 2023.

TL;DR: Kim Eun-sook writing for Netflix. This oughtta be interesting.

Island

Time slot: Fridays
Broadcaster: TVING
Genre: Fantasy, action, thriller
Episode count: 6 (Part 1)

Reasons to watch: TVING’s Island comes with an exciting cast of Kim Nam-gil, Lee Da-hee, Cha Eun-woo, and (my beloved) Sung Joon — in addition to a hefty dose of CGI evil spirits and supernatural encounters. Adapted from a manhwa by the same name, the production has had a lot of fun playing up that angle, so let’s hope that means a no-holds-barred drama that has fun and is fun. Maybe with a bit of campiness too? That would be nice. And sadly, as with The Glory above, this drama is also set to endure a two-part structure (why why why!), with six additional episodes possibly maybe headed our way after Part 1 airs.

TL;DR: Kim Nam-gil, Lee Da-hee, fantasy premise to fill the coming Alchemy of Souls void?
