Shakira Praises BLACKPINK Rosé’s Cover of “Waka Waka”

Shakira shared a sweet message to BLACKPINK member Rosé after the idol sang the song on a variety show.

On the October 18th episode of JTBC’s “Knowing Bros”, also known as “Ask Us Anything”, Rosé performed a short cover of Shakira’s 2010 hit single “Waka Waka (Time for Africa)”. The song was released as the official anthem of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Though Rosé only sang a short portion of the song, that was enough to impress the Latin music legend. Shakira the clips to her social media accounts, including Twitter and Instagram. In the caption, Shakira wrote, “Oh wow! I loved seeing you do that! Super cute! Thanks, Rosé […] P.S. Love your hair!”

 The clip has been played over three million times on Shakira’s Instagram and has over half a million likes. On YouTube, Rosé’s clip on the show has over two million views. Following Shakira’s post concerning Rosé to her social media accounts, people couldn’t help but gush over the adorable interaction. Some have even asked for a collaboration! About Rosé

Rosé is a Korean-New Zealand singer and dancer based in South Korea. She was born in New Zealand and was raised in Australia. In 2012, Rosé auditioned for YG Entertainment after her father suggested she do so. In said auditions, she ranked first among 700 participants and two months later, she dropped out of school and moved to Seoul.

In 2012, she featured on G-Dragon’s song “Without You”, which peaked at number ten on the Gaon Music Chart and number 15 on the Billboard Korea K-pop Hot 100. At the time of its release, Rosé was not credited but has since been given credit after her debut.

Rosé trained under YG Entertainment for four years. In 2016, she debuted with BLACKPINK and was the last member to be revealed. other than her activities with the group, Rosé has also appeared on some variety shows solo. She appeared on “King of Masked Singer”, where she was praised for her vocals. She also appeared on “Fantastic Duo 2”.

In June 2020, YG Entertainment confirmed Rosé would be debuting as a soloist in 2020, following the release of BLACKPINK’s first full-length studio album.

Rosé is praised for her distinct vocal color. Following Rosé’s appearance on “Fantastic Duo 2”, South Korean singer Gummy – who Rosé cites as a musical role model – complimented her vocals, saying “Rosé’s voice is so unique. It is the type of voice young people love.”

As of October 2020, Rosé is the third-most followed Korean person on Instagram, with over 30.5 million followers. Since 2018, Rosé has consistently appeared on the Korean Business Research Institute’s female singers brand reputation rankings and has reached the top 10 a handful of times.
