Sniffing out criminals with Joo-won in Stealer

The main teaser for tvN’s Stealer: The Treasure Keeper is out, and from the looks of it, the show is gearing up to be part action caper, part comedy romp. Joo-won (Alice) stars as our titular thief Hwang Dae-myung, who’s a civil servant by day and a stealer of cultural artifacts by night.

As the notorious thief “Skunk,” his hero name seems to be a bit more literal than I thought. See, his bodysuit has a secret weapon that’s silent but deadly — a skunk spray. Except it comes out looking a lot more like, uh, flatulence. Upon a demonstration of the suit’s capabilites by the team’s hacker Choi Hwa-jung (Jealousy Incarnate), Dae-myung is hit by a cloud of skunk stink. One whiff and he promptly passes out, LOL.

Though Skunk initially worked alone, his righteous robberies soon catch the attention of the secret organization Karma. Both their modus operandi align — retrieving the valuable artifacts that rich snobs have gotten their grubby hands on, and returning them back to their rightful places. Karma’s leader and government agent Jang Tae-in, played by Jo Han-chul (Big Bet), sums it up: “We’re clearing them out. Together.”

They’ll be going up against our resident big bad Lee Deok-hwa (One Dollar Lawyer), who plays the wealthy hoarder Kim Young-soo. Judging by his brusque demeanor and testy admonishments, Karma will have their work cut out for them. Luckily, the rest of the team is filled out by equally outstanding individuals, and we get to see a glimpse of them in action.

First of all, there’s the cop Lee Joo-woo (Why Her), who’s charismatic at the casino table and confused in the car with a mischievous Dae-myung. With her versatile charms, she’s more than capable of pulling the wool over her enemies’ eyes.

Then we have the adorable team maknae Kim Jae-won (Our Blues), whose bashful smile reflects his earnest and diligent disposition.

Karma may seem like a ragtag band of eclectic personalities, but perhaps that might just be their greatest strength. With their diverse talents and unified goal, there’s no stopping them. As Dae-myung rightfully declares, “We can’t let these cultural assets fall into the bad guys’ hands!”

Helmed by PD Choi Joon-bae (Mouse, Come Here and Hug Me) with scripts written by Shin Kyung-il, Stealer: The Treasure Keeper premieres next week on April 12.
