Clockwise: Song Kang-ho, Byun Yo-han, Seo Hyun-woo, Lee Kyu-hyung
The main lineup has been announced for the period bromance Uncle Sam-shik, which marks the great Song Kang-ho’s (Emergency Declaration) highly anticipated drama debut.
Set in the turbulent 1960’s era of South Korea, the story follows the friendship of our title’s Uncle Sam-shik as well as the character Kim San – played by Song Kang-ho and Byun Yo-han (Mr. Sunshine) respectively. San was one of the lucky few who got to study in the U.S. on a scholarship and returned to Korea afterwards with big dreams for his future. But reality was harsher than San expected, which is when Uncle Sam-shik appeared in his life – offering assistance and reassuring San that they shared the same dreams.
Lee Kyu-hyung (May It Please the Court), on the other hand, takes on the part of Kang Sung-min, who had been staying by Sam-shik’s side solely to take advantage and further his own ambitions. But having no further use of Sam-shik, Sung-min is ready to cut all ties and their now hostile relationship becomes a factor in pushing Sam-shik to San.
Rounding out the main quartet, Seo Hyun-woo (Call My Agent) plays a colleague of San named Jung Han-min. He shares a similar background of serving in the military and studying abroad through a scholarship – in addition to learning that chasing your dreams is not an easy feat. But, unlike San, Han-min is a soldier through and through, and his passion is about creating reforms in the military.
Written and directed by filmmaker Shin Yeon-shik (Cassiopeia), the 10-episode drama has finalized casting and is currently still in the planning stages.
