Streaming live with Go Hyun-jung in Netflix’s Mask Girl

Making quite the impression with an eye-catching new poster and video teaser, we finally get our first look at the black comedy-thriller’s unscrupulously colorful characters who inhabit the world of Netflix’s Mask Girl.

Based on a webtoon by the same title, the central character is Kim Momi, a role shared by three different actors: Go Hyun-jung (Reflection of You), Nana (Glitch), and a mysterious rookie who has not yet been revealed. As teased by the promo tagline, though, our heroine is somehow linked to three names and three lives, in addition to (yikes!) three murders.

Although a seemingly ordinary woman, Momi struggles with insecurities about her appearance, and becomes a popular vlogger while keeping her face hidden behind a mask. In the trailer, we begin by taking the seat of her viewers as Yeom Hye-ran (The Glory) begins the chat in Momi’s heart-filled livestream.

As things take a sinister turn, I’m briefly distracted by the music (long live Queen Kim Wan-sun!) as well as Ahn Jae-hong’s (Be Melodramatic) commitment to visually embody his role. Slow clap. He takes on the role of Momi’s co-worker, Joo Oh-nam, and has long harbored a crush on Momi. But one day Oh-nam suddenly goes missing, prompting Mom (Yeom Hye-ran) to start her own search for the truth.

Written and directed by filmmaker Kim Yong-hoon (Beasts Clawing at Straws), Netflix’s Mask Girl will be releasing next month on August 18.
