The hunt begins in new Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938 teaser

The promos are coming in aplenty for tvN’s upcoming sequel Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938, and as much as I have enjoyed the previous promos (read: Kim Bum’s haircut and axe), it’s this third teaser that sealed the deal for me.

Starring Lee Dong-wook (Bad and Crazy) and Kim Bum (Ghost Doctor) reprising their roles as deliciously antagonist brothers Lee Yeon and Lee Rang, the story has our gumiho hero mysteriously pulled back to 1938.

Yes, it’s 1938, but something about this teaser and the drama’s sets just screams “old west shootout” to me. For instance, we open with Yeon in a town square of sorts, with fires blazing behind him and casings dropping from his rifle. He narrates, “You protected me, but…” It’s flippin’ serious and dramatic as Yeon takes aim at Rang… except he’s shooting off the tip of his cigarette and shouts at Rang to stop smoking. HAHA! It’s this blend of mythos and campy humor that I find practically irresistible.

The teaser continues with a text screen reading “The hunt is beginning” and all sorts of shootouts and action scenes. Interspersed we see our femme fatale Kim So-yeon (Penthouse 3). She plays the former guardian spirit and current restauranteur Ryu Hong-joo, and threatens in voiceover, “Try to rescue them, if you can.” We also catch sight of another former guardian spirit possibly gone rogue in the shape of Ryu Kyung-soo (Glitch), along with a whole lot of hints of the drama’s major beats: rescuing, protecting, and payback time.

Outside of making me laugh and anticipate the premiere even more, the best thing this teaser did was set the scene a bit more. We hear Yeon wonder, “If the past changes, will the future be different?” This sets up all sorts of exciting time-slip hijinks, and best of all it’s centered around our two brothers, and the overlap of past and future.

Writer Han Woo-ri and director Kang Shin-hyo return, and it looks like they are pulling the best of the first season into the sequel. Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938 premieres on May 6 in the weekend slot.
