The Whirlwind pushes Sol Kyung-gu to hell with Kim Hee-ae

A new teaser and poster set has dropped for Netflix’s new political thriller The Whirlwind, throwing us like a ticking bomb into South Korea’s Blue House where the President is found killed. We then follow the ensuing scramble for power, with acting heavyweights Sol Kyung-gu (The Boys, Kill Boksoon) and Kim Hee-ae (Queenmaker) fighting gravitas with gravitas.

Opening on election season when political candidates had run their campaigns, Prime Minister Park Dong-ho (Sol Kyung-gu) reveals their duplicity, promising heaven for the nation but delivering them hell instead. We then cut to the now late President Kim Hong-pa (My Happy Ending) as he clutches his chest and collapses onto the floor.

Thus begins the race to claim the government throne and Minister of Economy Jung Soo-jin (Kim Hee-ae) makes her threat quite clear that she’s not about to let Prime Minster Park take the seat. I’m already a ball of nerves because they’re really selling the stakes, but also yuck because I did not need to see a centipede on my screen.

In the sequence, we also get a quick look at our story’s other players, including Secretary-General Kim Mi-sook (Payback) and Chief Secretary Im Se-mi (Wonderful World), in addition to Jeon Bae-soo (Queen of Tears), Kim Young-min (Queen of Tears), and Park Geun-hyung (Beauty and Mr. Romantic).

But despite Prime Minister Park’s stance on a high moral ground and righteous government, it’s certainly interesting to see how he’s compromising those very ethics “for the greater good” and even committing assassination – at least, so he says. The teaser then closes as he stands off against Minister of Economy Jung, proposing that they join hands and go down to hell together.

With directing helmed by PD Kim Yong-wan (If You Wish Upon Me) and scripts penned by Park Kyung-soo (Whisper, Punch), Netflix’s upcoming The Whirlwind will be launching this month on June 28.
