Imagine how amazing it would be if you go to a class to analyze the love story of Captain Ri and Yoon Se-ri.

This is the expectation of what class BC 196: Analysis of K-drama Series with class code 29828 would be. The class is offered by the Broadcast Communication Department at the University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication.

The elective class requires that students have Netflix subscription or any access to the following K-drama series: Crash Landing on You (CLOY), Chicago Typewriter,” and Misaeng for starters. Students also need an internet connection, video conferencing applications such as Google Meet, Messenger, Viber, or Zoom. They must also have a computer whether desktop or laptop, tablet or cellphone with working video and audio output.

Unfortunately, all the slots are filled. Only 20 are available and they’re filled up. The demand for the class is at 173.

Korean pop culture

This is not the first time the university offered special classes tackling Korean pop culture. According to Korean Language Professor Kyung Min-bae, the university offered in the past BC197 Korean Studies and Media Studies and GS197 Global Studies: From Kimchi to K-pop “which dealt with Korean studies including pop culture.”

Crash Landing on You stars Hyun Bin and Son Ye jin. The K-drama is about an heiress who accidentally paraglided and landed on the North Korean officer’s arms. Chicago Typewriter stars Yoo Ah-in and Im Soo-jung. It’s about an author whose possessed typewriter allows him to relive his past life. “Misaeng” is about a retired baduk player and it stars Im Si-wan, Kang So-ra, and Kang Haneul.
