We know that BTS are not afraid to talk about social issues and mental health in their songs. It is these songs that allow fans to relate and heal through their heartfelt and genuine lyrics. Here are several songs that touch on mental health.
1. “Tomorrow” -BTS
Tomorrow is a part of their Skool Luv Affair album that was released in 2014. The song expresses the hardship of the young generation today and how they are afraid for “tomorrow.” They feel as if they are running in place and that nothing will ever change.
I have a long way to go but why am I running in place?
I scream out of frustration but the empty air echoes
I hope tomorrow will be different from today
I’m just wishing
Because the dawn right before the sun rises is the darkest
Even in the far future, never forget the you of right now.
2. “The Last” – Agust D
The Last is a part of AGUST D’s mixtape released in 2016. Suga takes it to a deeper level as he reveals his most vulnerable side to his fans through his lyrics. His personal experiences in life are exposed through the lyrics, allowing fans to relate and understand Suga’s past struggles in life.
The conflict with ideal, my head hurts
Around the age of 18, I developed social anxiety
Right, that was when my mind was gradually polluted
At times I’m scared of myself too
Thanks to the depression that takes over me
And all my self hatred
Habitual saying uh
I don’t give a shit I don’t give a fuck
All those words uh
Those words are said to hide my weak self
3. “So Far Away” – Agust D
So Far Away is another track off of Suga’s 2016 mix tape that touches base on the pain and loneliness he feels of feeling behind while other people are chasing after their dreams.
That’s right, fuck, I live because I can’t die
But I don’t have anything I want to do
I’m in so much pain and loneliness but people around me
Keep telling me to regain my consciousness
I try to vent my anger but I only got myself
So what’s the point of venting my anger
I’m scared to open my eyes everyday and start breathing
I’m abandoned like this in the world
In this moment I’m drifting away from the sky
I’m falling
Dream, I will be there for your creation
Until the end of your life
Dream, wherever you might be
It will be lenient
Dream, you will fully bloom
After all the hardships
Dream, your beginnings will seem humble
So prosperous will your future be
4. “Always”- RM
Always is a solo track by RM which was released in 2017 through BTS’ Soundcloud. This track talks about his thoughts regarding life in general and how things sometimes never worked out no matter how much he tried. He later explained that he was able to release this song because he no longer felt like the person in the lyrics.
In this loud silence
I live to understand the world
But the world has never understood me, why
No, that half is missing
It’s trying to hurt me
I miss me miss me baby
Why is it that I’m being so earnest
Yet it’s not working out
If I ever meet God, I would tell him this
That life is coffee that I never ordered
I would grab him by the collar and tell him
Death is an Americano you can’t refill
Are you sure that you’re alive
5. “Reflection” -RM
“Reflection” is a part of the Wings album released in 2016. The lyrics can be interpreted in different ways depending on the listener, but RM’s main point is his wish to be happy and to love himself as a person. This can be difficult at times as it can be hard as humans to look at only the positive sides of life.
The world is just another name for despair
My height is just another diameter for the earth
I am all of my joy and anxiety
It repeats everyday, the love and hate directed to me
People look happier than the day
Everyone else knows where they’re supposed to be
But only I walk without purpose
But still, blending in with them is more comfortable
I wish I could love myself
I wish I could love myself
I wish I could love myself
6. “Whalien 52” – BTS
“Whalien 52” is a part of their album The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part2 released in 2015. This song is based off the discovery back in 1989 that a whale sang at a frequency of 52 Hz, which mean that it couldn’t be heard by other whales. Despite not being able to be heard, it kept singing. Even as the years passed, no other whale was recorded singing at this frequency. This track expresses this story through the song as the alienation from others and how the young generation feel against the older generation.
The fact that no matter how much they shout, it won’t reach
Makes them so gravely lonely that they quietly shut their mouths
These words that are easily said towards me quickly becomes a wall
Even loneliness turns into something you can see
An endless signal will reach someday
Everywhere, even to the other side of the earth
No more, no more baby
No more, no more
Even the blind whales will be able to see me
Today I sing again
7. “Sea” -BTS
“Sea” is a part of the Love Yourself: Her album and is a hidden track, meaning if it only available on the physical album. This track talks about their hardships trying to make it alongside larger agencies and groups.
There’s endless sand and the rough wind
I’m still looking at a desert
I wanted to have the sea so I swallowed you up
But I’m even thirstier than before
Is what I know really the ocean?
Or a blue desert?
Is this the sea or the desert?
Is this hope or despair?
Is this real or fake? shit
Everything’s, the same thing
With a different name
It’s life again
What other BTS songs have touched you in a personal way?
