News bites: April 26, 2023

Clockwise: Kim Hee-sun, Lee Hye-young, Kang Hae-rim, Kim Nam-hee

  • Although I’m scratching my head on the mix of genres — a screwball comedy and thriller about family — perhaps it’s apt that the drama’s title is Gaslighting and they’ve lined up an interesting cast. Starring Kim Hee-sun (Remarriage & Desires), Lee Hye-young (Big Bet), Kim Nam-hee (Family: The Unbreakable Bond), and Kang Hae-rim (Somebody), production is being led by filmmaker Kim Seung-woo (Gone Girl) and writer Nam Ji-yeon (So I Married an Anti-fan). • Kim Haneul (Kill Heel) is considering a new KBS drama called Let’s Get Grabbed by the Collar (roughly translated), which is based on a web novel by the same title. If she accepts, Kim will be playing a news reporter who is determined to clear her name after being wrongfully accused of murder. Planning to broadcast in 2024, PD Lee Ho is attached to direct. • A new poster and video teaser have dropped for Cinema Heaven’s Finland Papa, starring Kim Bora (Love Scene Number) and Kim Woo-seok (Bulgasal: Immortal Souls) in a heartwarming little tale about family and love. The healing romance premieres this week, on April 29. [Sports Kyunghyang]
  • tvN announced that they’re making a change to their Wednesday-Thursday timeslot, which had previously been reserved for dramas only. The tentative plan going forward is to allow a mixed lineup, including dramas, variety shows, documentaries, and other programs. Currently, the new variety show Dancing Queens on the Road is slated to follow Stealer: The Treasure Keeper. [Osen]

Lee Je-hoon

  • Over on MBC, Lee Je-hoon (Taxi Driver 2) has been confirmed for their upcoming crime procedural Chief Inspector 1963 (working title). The original classic series aired over two decades, between 1971-1989, with veteran actor Choi Bool-am (Goodbye to Goodbye) in the title role. Filming for the new remake is set to begin later this year, with scripts by Kim Young-shin and filmmaker Kim Sung-hoon (Rampant) at the helm. [MBC]
  • ENA’s New Recruit 2 released their lineup, with most of the original cast reprising their roles, including Jang Sung-beom (Call It Love). Newly joining the cast is Kim Ji-suk (Kiss Sixth Sense). Adapted from the web animation series from the YouTube channel Studio JBBJ, the new second season will be broadcasting in August. [News]
  • Despite the many promos, I just can’t get enough of tvN’s Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938 and we have a new round of pretty stills (puppy!) and a video teaser to feast on before the fantasy finally premieres next week. Airing on weekends, Lee Dong-wook (Bad and Crazy), Kim So-yeon (Penthouse 3), Kim Bum (Ghost Doctor), and Ryu Kyung-soo (Glitch) will be on our screens at last on May 6. [News, News]
