On April 7, Seoul Metro released an analysis of Korean subway advertisements in 2019. With 10,468 advertisements created last year, there was a lot of data to sift through, and 2,166 of them were advertisements for various K-Pop artists — 21% of the total amount. This is a huge leap from a couple years ago — in 2014, only 76 advertisements were idol-based, and that number didn’t react past 2,000 until 2018!
A huge reason for this increase in idol advertisements is because of Produce 101, which first aired in 2016. These advertisements are usually used to celebrate and congratulate idol birthdays, anniversaries, and other important events, and Produce 101 fans used them to promote their favorite trainees in the program and to encourage people to vote for them. While they are occasionally used to surprise and support regular civilians, more often than not they are used for celebrities — which makes sense, since the average cost for one is about 4.5 million won (~$3,700 USD) per month!
