It’s hard to believe now, but 2018, one of BTS‘s most successful years, nearly began with their disbandment.
At 2018 MAMA in Hong Kong, Jin revealed that the group had considered going their separate ways because of the difficulties they were facing at the time.
We had a hard time mentally during the beginning of this year. While talking with each other, we even thought about disbanding.

Despite these struggles, the members decided to keep moving forward and continue their journey together.
But we regather our hearts, and I’m glad that we were able to produce such a great result…I’m thankful towards my members who decided to continue… I want to thank my members who always love me and to say thank you to ARMY for always loving us. Thank you.

Fast forward to 2020. In Episode 1 of BTS’s new docuseries, Break The Silence, BTS opened up about that year of hardship and triumph. Jungkook remembers 2018 as a year of re-evaluation that made him concerned about what his life would be like the following year.
A lot of things happened in 2018. There were moments that were really tough, but still a lot of good things happened as well. I think we’re re-evaluating our position, our actions, and things like that every year. So, looking back at what happened in 2018, it made me think, “What kind of path will I be on in 2019?” I thought about it a lot that year, and my concerns doubled as well.

Suga believes that the doubts and demands of a “roller coaster” career were part of why BTS got off to a rocky start in 2018. It was a year where they reflected on themselves.
I think it’s because things got really hard at the start of the year. There were a lot of things to think about at the time, and there was a lot of doubt about this work. That was on all our minds that year since this job constantly demands that you be on a roller coaster ride. It turned out to be a year where we could reflect on ourselves. That’s what I think.

“In 2018, I think a lot of unexpected things happened that year,” J-Hope said. “Honestly, it felt a bit scary because we never expected so many things that came our way, and we were actually doing them.”
Although 2018 brought many worries and surprises, J-Hope remembers it fondly. For him, the release of his mixtape, Hope World, was a dream come true. For BTS, he said, “it was one of our best years.”
