Jang Geun-seok bites the Bait in his dramaland comeback

Jang Geun-seok is back! Coupang Play’s upcoming thriller Bait (previously Chronicles of Crime) marks his return to the small screen five years after Switch, and by the looks of it, he’s ready to bring out the big guns.
The drama’s first teaser gives us a generous preview of the action to come, effectively keeping us intrigued. Heo Sung-tae (Big Bet) plays the charismatic chairman Noh Sang-chun, who’s welcomed onstage with a round of applause. His rousing speech has them enraptured, and in no time, he’s earned himself countless investors.
However, the veil soon falls — Sang-chun is in fact a scammer, and he’s just pulled off a 5 trillion won hustle. It’s the biggest fraud in history, devastating innumerable citizens. Worse yet, Sang-chun dies in a (suspiciously convenient) traffic accident in China while fleeing from the authorities, leaving no recourse for his victims.

Eight years later, we meet our hero Gu Do-han (Jang Geun-seok). Despite his previous career in law, he’s currently working as a detective. Minus one sharp suit, plus one scruffy beard! When the police receive a call from someone fearfully claiming that Sang-chun has come to kill them, they’re utterly confused. As Do-han points out — Sang-chun is dead. Isn’t he?
That question hangs in the air as the chase begins. All the evidence points to Sang-chun, but the teaser’s closing scene calls that into doubt. As an impending murder victim cowers in terror, his captor dials the police and holds up a script for him to read: “Please save me. Noh Sang-chun has come to kill me.”
Ooh, the bait is thrown! Is Sang-chun alive? Or is his name being used for an ulterior motive? Who are these victims, and are they also connected to the case from eight years ago? As the passionate reporter Cheon Na-yeon, Lee Elijah (Delayed Justice) will be investigating this controversy, and I’m curious to see what answers she finds.
Directed by Kim Hong-sun (Money Heist: Korea — Joint Economic Area, The Guest) with scripts penned by Kim Jin-wook, Part 1 of Bait will premiere on January 27 for a total of six episodes. Subsequently, Part 2 is scheduled to air in the first half of this year.
