Kim So-hye’s last match in My Lovely Boxer with Lee Sang-yub

Kim So-hye’s last match in My Lovely Boxer with Lee Sang-yub

With the premiere now just a couple weeks away, KBS takes us into the final round of promos for My Lovely Boxer and the newest teaser opens right inside the ring, with our heroine Kim So-hye (How to Buy a Friend) – playing boxing legend Lee Kwon-sook – lying collapsed on the mat.

As the referee counts down, Kwon-sook thinks back to sports agent Lee Sang-yub’s (Eve) voice of support: “What’s important is to not leave behind any regrets. Only then will you be able to see what’s inside of you.” Kwon-sook wonders if winning will help her see. But he replies, “If you make an effort to win. That way, you won’t have any regrets left.”

We then jump to the issue of Kim Tae-young’s (Lee Sang-yub) motivation, which involves the shady gambling operator Park Ji-hwan (Our Blues). The threat to our hero is very clear: “Either bring the money within three months or ensure to win the match. Our chairman isn’t a man of patience.”

This leads Tae-young to seek out Kwon-sook, pleading for her return to boxing – just for three months. But Kwon-sook doesn’t budge. She blames the sport for her mother’s death and has other important matters in her life now, such as first love Kim Jin-woo (Love for a Thousand More).

Kwon-sook is also overwhelmed when bombarded by the press about her disappearance and Tae-young demands to know why: “So then tell me, why you started boxing, why you quit, why you lived in hiding! Let me understand. And then, let’s run away from the ring.”

Although a fellow athlete warns Kwon-sook about Tae-young’s persuasive tactics, our heroine can’t help but be won over by his sincerity. Opening up to Tae-young, she admits that, “I’m going to try trusting you. But if you betray me, you’ll be dead by my hands.”

Tae-young reassures Kwon-sook that she can tell him anything. But, lest we forget, Tae-young is still fielding threats and he’s warned: “Next time, don’t mess up. Because next time, it might not happen here and it might be someone else instead of you.” Desperate, Tae-young screams, “This is Kwon-sook’s last risk! Her last match! Please help!”

Finally, it’s game time and Dad Kim Hyung-mook (Longing for You) encourages a battered Kwon-sook, telling her it’s okay if she loses. But our heroine resolves to go back in, determining, “It’s not a matter of losing. I need to pour out everything that I can in order to never come back here.”

In the final sequence, we’re introduced to our story’s main cast and we contemplatively end on the same confession that Kwon-sook revealed in previous trailers: “Boxing scares me… Still, I’ll win today’s match.”

Written by Kim Min-joo (Let Me Hear Your Song) with PD Choi Sang-yeol (Let Me Hear Your Song) at the helm, KBS’s My Lovely Boxer premieres later this month on August 21.
