Making a second love story with Kim Soo-hyun and Kim Ji-won

New character teasers have been released for tvN’s upcoming Queen of Tears, showcasing our wedded leads Kim Soo-hyun (One Ordinary Day) and Kim Ji-won (My Liberation Notes) as they try to make sense of all their new ~feelings~ as love blooms again in their three-year marriage.

As a Lady and the Tramp match, it’s both a blessing and a curse for our commoner hero Baek Hyun-woo (Kim Soo-hyun), who begins his teaser with the TLDR version of his story: “My boss is my wife.” It’s an uncomfortable situation at work to say the least, and Hyun-woo is having a difficult time with wife Hong Hae-in (Kim Ji-won) as well as his chaebol in-laws.

In the shortest of shots, we then get a quick glimpse of our heroine’s family, which includes dad Jung Jin-young (LTNS), mom Na Young-hee (Queen of Divorce), younger brother Kwak Dong-yeon (Gaus Electronics), and grandpa Kim Gab-soo (Today’s Webtoon). You’d think they would have an entourage of cooks, but somehow Hyun-woo has taken the place of a traditional daughter-in-law and it’s sadly hilarious to see him crying in the kitchen, slaving over the feast preparations alone.

Despite Hyun-woo’s contentions, though, he can’t help but be dumbstruck by the pretty, pretty Hae-in and as time slows in the moment, he wonders, “Seeing my wife made my heart beat. I must have finally gone mad.” Hyun-woo then becomes a bundle of worries, fussing that Hae-in might catch cold and bandaging her scratched knee. When she suggests cuddling if the bed is too narrow to sleep apart, Hyun-woo turns around in shock to ask, “Is that, by chance, what you want?” With Hae-in remaining on his mind, the teaser then ends on Hyun-woo’s next fervent question, “Are you… going straight to sleep?”

Every story has more than one side, though, and we learn in Hae-in’s teaser that she has her own marriage concerns. Although she’s the fabulous picture of confidence wherever she goes, even Hae-in can’t completely shake off the persistent rumors that Hyun-woo only wanted to marry up for the Queen’s Group money. But instead of communicating what’s wrong, Hae-in only confuses Hyun-woo with a vague demand: “Be good to the people next to you.”

Hae-in then spends the better part of her day distracted by the pretty, pretty Hyun-woo. But she stubbornly denies reality and questions her health instead, wondering, “My husband looks handsome. Am I sick?” We then watch as Hae-in falls deeper in love, admitting, “I want to be… embraced by my husband and gaze into each other’s eyes. Just looking at his face is an enjoyment.” The teaser then closes as Hae-in cringes at the horror of her new self: “I wasn’t like this before, how can my heart flutter from looking at my husband?”

Meanwhile, the audience is gnashing their teeth at the pair of them because how can your heart not flutter if either of them are your partner? But I trust that we’re in good hands with the rom-com written by Park Ji-eun (Crash Landing on You) and co-directing by PD Jang Young-woo (Bulgasal – Immortal Souls) and PD Kim Hee-won (Soundtrack #2, Little Women).

tvN’s Queen of Tears premieres next month on March 9, airing in the weekend slot following Captivating the King.
