JYP Entertainment Files 37 Legal Cases Against TWICE’s Defamation and Malicious Commenters

JYP Entertainment is making a move to protect their girl group TWICE over malicious commenters as well as defamation.

JYP Entertainment said on the 20th that it had filed 37 complaints against the group “Twice Haters.” In addition to malicious comments, the complaint includes a community and a specific blog containing serious articles that defame TWICE. They will proceed with all possible civil and criminal legal actions against it.

JYP will continue to take strong legal action against artists’ defamation and obstructing their activities through malicious comments and spreading false information in the future, as mentioned by the agency.

In June, JYP also said on Twice’s Twitter account that there have been continuous cases of writing, distributing, and spreading of groundless false information and that they have secured evidence and filed complaints and accusations against writers and distributors for spreading false facts, damaging the girl’s reputation, and obstructing their works.

In October of last year, JYP revealed to have made a move by suing those who slander the girls. “We sued malicious comments about TWICE and those postings that defame the artist,” JYP revealed.

On the other hand, most of the charges of defamation or insult due to malicious comments are summarily indicted and ended up with fines. Even if a prison sentence is given, the chances are high that they will be given a suspended jail term. It is pointed out that punishment for malicious comments should be strengthened.

In February last year, the Supreme Court’s sentencing committee approved a standard for sentencing up to three years and nine months in prison for malicious comment crimes.

A lot of South Korean Entertainment agencies have moved forward to file cases against netizens who defame their artists through various online platforms. IU’s agency announced that the soloist’ haters who maliciously defamed her received their sentences and fines early this year. Super Junior Kim Heechul also revealed on his Instagram that he pushed through the same process and even hired six lawyers to work on the cases. A netizen even called out the K-pop idol through a social media platform, begging him to stop the lawsuit filed by the K-pop idol. However, it received tremendous backlash among netizens who came across the post.

Online bashing has been frequent among celebrities. While they are lauded by fans most of the time, some antis would target them through various forms of hate and ridicule. JYP Entertainment’s move is for protecting the welfare of its artists.
