Creating a flurry of media attention for various reasons, Netflix’s long awaited Squid Game 2 announced a talented lineup packed to the eyeballs – in addition to new stills from the sequel’s first script reading.
The key character, of course, is our returning hero Lee Jung-jae (Chief of Staff) as the no-longer-scruffy Sung Ki-hoon. He’ll be joined by tenacious police officer Hwang Jun-ho, with Wie Ha-joon (Little Women) reprising his role.
Also coming back is the mysterious Front Man – played by Lee Byung-heon (Our Blues) – and, as teased in the previous video announcement, we can expect to see our slaphappy Gong Yoo (The Silent Sea) in some capacity as well.
With the huge success of Season 1, there are big shoes to fill for the upcoming sequel, and the production has secured an impressive cast to zip up in tracksuits for the new season’s story.
Although we don’t yet know anything about the characters themselves, the first announcements shockingly revealed that Im Shi-wan (Summer Strike), Kang Haneul (Curtain Call), Park Sung-hoon (The Glory), and Yang Dong-geun (The Forbidden Marriage) will be co-starring in this second season.
The surprises continued in later updates, unveiling others in the large ensemble cast. The many, many names include Park Kyu-young (Celebrity), Jo Yu-ri (Work Later Drink Now 2), Kang Ae-shim (Divorce Attorney Shin), and Lee David (Law School), in addition to Lee Jin-wook (Welcome to Wedding Hell), TOP (a.k.a. Choi Seung-hyun, IRIS), and Noh Jae-won (Once Upon a Small Town), as well as Won Ji-ahn (Heartbeat).
With the main cast now finalized, filming for the sequel is set to take place this year. As with the first season, Netflix’s Squid Game 2 will also be both written and directed by filmmaker Hwang Dong-hyuk (Collectors, The Fortress).
