Pyo Ye-jin dreams of becoming Lee Jun-young’s Cinderella

Just when I was thinking the jam-packed May couldn’t possibly squeeze in another premiere, TVING made a sneak drop announcement, kicking off promos for I Openly Dream of Cinderella. Starring Pyo Ye-jin (Moon in the Day) and Lee Jun-young (The Impossible Heir) as our love bound pair, we’re first introduced to the rom-com’s main cast in the newly released script reading stills.
Similar to the well known fairy tale heroine, we meet our leading lady Shin Jae-rim – played by Pyo Ye-jin – when she’s down on her luck, having bumped her head one too many times on the towering obstacles invading her life path. Feeling burnt by everyday life’s endless toiling, Jae-rim decides that the Cinderella route may be her only escape and dreams of finding her own charming prince.
I fear, though, that Jae-rim is barking up the wrong trope. Cinderella and the like may have their arms full with suave princes in the far away kingdoms of fairy tales. However, dramaland’s equivalent chaebols are notoriously prickly and Lee Jun-young playing our story’s Moon Cha-min is a textbook example – classically cold and cynical to boot.
In contrast, Kim Hyun-jin (Cheer Up) plays the gentle and courteous Baek Do-hong, a self-made filmmaker whose success was hard-earned. Also in a second lead role, Song Ji-woo (Doctor Slump) takes on the character Ban Dan-ah, who is described as a potty-mouthed princess.
Production for the series has writer Baek Mi-kyung (Strong Girl Nam-soon) in a creative role, together with PD Kim Min-kyung (Comedy Big League, SNL Korea) directing and scripts by rookie writer Yoo Ja. With a runtime of 10 episodes, TVING’s I Openly Dream of Cinderella will be launching this May.
