The Most Anticipated Netflix Korean Dramas Of 2021

Netflix is ramping up its expansion in South Korea with an amazing lineup of original series in 2021 starring some of the biggest names in the industry.

Today, we’re taking a look at some of the most anticipated Netflix Korean dramas of 2021 which also include sequels to some beloved series.

The Silent Sea” is one of the most talked-about Korean dramas of 2021 as it boasts a star-studded cast. Gong Yoo, Bae Doo Na and Lee Joon will be returning on the small screen in the new sci-fi drama. It marks Gong Yoo first drama since “Goblin” and Lee Joon first comeback project since his military discharge.

The drama will be eight episodes long and is set in the future where desertification leaves the earth with shortage of food and water. A special team composed of the main cast is set to retrieve a mysterious sample abandoned on a research station in the moon.

The drama is an extension on the short film directed by director Choi Hang Yong who is also directing the Netflix series. It will be written by Park Eun Gyo from the film “Mother.”

“The Sea of Silence” is scheduled to air some time in 2021 but the exact date hasn’t been set yet.

Originally set for a release in 2020, the hit series is Netflix’s first original Korean project, it aired exclusively on the platform. Due to the ending cliffhanger and great reception from fans, Netflix renewed the series for a second season.

Back in February of 2020, Netflix released photos of the first script reading signaling the beginning of the second season filming. Aside from that, not many updates about “Love Alarm 2” were released to the public.

Back in May of 2020, Song Kang said in an interview with ELLE that he was filming for the second season, a great sign since many kdramas had to push back or delay releases due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The second season is to be the continuation of the first season story Starring its original cast Kim So Hyun, Song Kang, and Jung Ga Ram.

Yoo Ah In is set to return to the small screen with his first drama in 4 years with “Hell,” a drama about people who hear prediction about their owns deaths, when their time comes a death angel appears and take their lives.

The drama will be led by Yoo Ah In, Park Jung Min, Kim Hyun Joo, Won Jin Ah, and Yang Ik Jun, and will be directed by Yeon Sang Ho, who directed the hit film “Train to Busan.”

While this isn’t a series per se, it is an original Netflix series set to be released in 2021.

Kingdom 2: Ashin of the North” will focus on Jun Ji Hyun’s character who appeared in the last minutes of “Kingdom” season 2. It will be only one episode focusing on her character Ashin. and in addition to her story, the episode will detail the origin story of the resurrection plant. Park Byung Eun is also set to appear in the episode as well.

D.P is another webtoon adaptation, it tells the story of a soldier who is quiet and calm but inflexible (Jung Hae In) meets a sergeant (Kim Sung Kyun) who notices his shortcomings, he transfers him to the D.P. (Deserter Pursuit) team.

Their mission is to catch deserters. There the soldier meets Corporal Han Ho Yeol (Koo Gyo Hwan), he begins to give the soldier the investigative know-how, but he annoys him sometimes.

It boasts a great cast of Jung Hae In, Koo Gyo Hwan, Kim Sung Kyun, Son Seok Koo and Lee Jun Young.

Undercover” tells the story of a woman named Yoon Ji Woo’s (Han So Hee) whose father dies suddenly, she wants to avenge his death and find out who’s behind it. She works for a drug crime group Dongcheonpa. Choi Moo-Jin (Park Hee Soon) is the boss of the drug gang, he helps her uncover the reason behind her father’s death.

Yoon Ji Woo joins the police department to become a mole for the drug group, she gets assigned to work in the drug investigation unit in the police department where she meets her partner Detective Jeon Pil-Do (Ahn Bo Hyun).

It boasts a great cast including: Han So Hee, Park Hee Soon, Ahn Bo Hyun, Kim Sang Ho and Lee Hak Joo.

It’ll also mark Han So Hee’s first leading role since her breakout role in “The World Of The Married.” The drama will be directed by Kim Jin Min, who directed the Netflix drama “Extracurricular” that aired earlier this year.
