“Mr. Queen” is off to a great start!
The newly historical drama “Mr. Queen” led by Shin Hye Sun and Kim Jung Hyun has already broken a record.
On December 12, “Mr. Queen” premiered its first episode. According to Nielsen Korea, the first episode of “Mr. Queen” scored an average nationwide rating of 8.0% and a peak of 9.9%, which meant it took the first place among its timeslot across all channels.
As a result, “Mr. Queen” has become the second highest viewership ratings of any weekend drama in tvN history to date, coming second to “Mr. Sunshine” who had scored average nationwide rating of 8.9%. It also outperformed its predecessor drama “Start-up” with higher ratings that any of its episodes throughout its run.
“Mr. Queen” tells the story of a man from modern times whose soul gets trapped in the body of a queen living in the Joseon dynasty era. Shin Hye Sun plays the role of Kim So Yong, the Joseon queen with the soul of Blue House chef Jang Bong Hwan trapped inside her, while Kim Jung Hyun plays her husband King Cheoljong.
OCN’s “The Uncanny Counter” ratings declined a bit, it scored an average nationwide rating of 6.1% for its 5th episode.
JTBC’s new drama “Hush” saw a dip with its second episode scoring 2.6%, while TV Chosun’s “The Goddess of Revenge” scored 2.5%

My personal thoughts- written by Jazmine K.
I don’t generally like historical dramas whether they’re in my native language or any other language but I’ve made an exception because the premise is very interesting in “Mr. Queen”. Added to that, the marketing department has done a great job promoting this drama properly and in a way that differentiates it from the majority of other historical kdramas. The teasers got me even more excited.
I’ve seen the first episode of “Mr. Queen” and I like it so far, it’s very interesting and it reminded me of “Scarlet Heart Ryeo” where a similar thing happened, however, this time it’s a man going inside a woman’s body not a woman going inside another woman’s body. It’ll be interesting how they wrap this up and whether it’ll be a similar ending to “Scarlet Heart Ryeo” or not.
I didn’t know how to feel about “Hush” first episode, but I cried a lot watching the second episode, nobody warned me; it reminded me of my personal mental health struggles so it was very emotional for me. YoonA is doing great this time too and veteran actor Hwang Jung Min is really a gem, he’s so unique and the way he carries the character is so different from what I usually see.
As far as I know, Hwang Jung Min doesn’t do kdramas, he usually does movies, this is his first drama project since 2012 so I concluded that this will get even better. I have higher expectations moving forward.
“The Uncanny Counter” is such a treat, I am in love with everyone’s performance, all the characters are so cute, Jo Byeong Gyu’s performance here is just AMAZING. He has such an innocent charm to him and he’s doing a great job. Idol-actress Sejong is also surprisingly better than I had anticipated; she will become big one day. This is my first drama watching her acting, she is better than the average idol-actor.
