Premiere Watch: Unlock the Boss, Connect

We have a busy week of premieres ahead, so here is what we are looking at for our midweek slots, with another post coming to go through all the upcoming weekend shows. It’s going to be a busy December, and it looks like more of the same for January, so buckle up!

Unlock the Boss

Time slot: Wednesday-Thursday
Broadcaster: ENA
Genre: Comedy, fantasy, mystery
Episode count: 12

Reasons to watch: If you’re like me and have fallen under the spell of the smiley Chae Jong-hyeop + have a weakness for cheesy dramas, the reasons to watch Unlock the Boss are a no brainer. But also, there’s Park Sung-woong being funny, and I long to see how he plays against Chae Jong-hyeop here. They’re sure to be a riot, if all goes will with the script (which is written by the screenwriter behind Sweet Home, interestingly). If you can get behind the plot of a person getting locked in a smartphone — which, yes — this could be a fun one.

TL;DR: Chae Jong-hyeop, Park Sung-woong, silly premise, promise of laughter

Connect

Time slot: Wednesday (single drop)
Broadcaster: Disney+
Genre: Mystery, horror, crime, thriller
Episode count: 6

Reasons to watch: We have another imaginative premise with Connect, but this one takes a darker turn from our other premiere, with Jung Hae-in playing a new type of human, and Go Kyung-pyo playing a serial killer masquerading as a bland nice guy (heh). The trailers are all kinds of creepy, and it looks like this drama will fit into what we’ve been seeing from Disney+ of late in the K-drama space: high budget productions with great talent all around, but quite dark and heavy in terms of tone. (It’s kinda like they’re copying this other streaming service I know…) Anyway, Connect also boasts Japanese film director Takashi Miike, and has a lot of buzz around it. Now, I am willing to do a lot of things for Jung Hae-in, but unfortunately watching a horror drama about eyeball harvesting is not one of them.

TL;DR: Jung Hae-in! Go Kyung-pyo! (Except also eyeballs, bloody tentacles, and other such things)
